Does Exercise improve your Mental Health?


Most of us attribute fitness and exercise to physical improvement and looking good but we seldom think about the relationship between health and exercise, especially when it comes to mental fitness. 

This blog will highlight the importance of exercise for mental health and will underline the relation between exercise and mental health, so you can be active and energetic all through the day.


Sleep-


It is important to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep every day as studies show that lack of sleep can exacerbate mental conditions. Exercise also increases the temperature of the body and zaps your energy, so at the end of the day, you’re too tired to fight the urge to sleep. 

However, it is advised to avoid exercising near bedtime as it might disrupt the body’s clock which determines when we should be alert and when we should feel sleepy.

Depression & Anxiety-


It is important to understand that depression and anxiety are still relatively unknown topics and research has to lead to everchanging results on its origins and how to cope with it. Exercise has been used effectively as a stand-alone treatment as well as in combination with therapy and medication creating a hybrid model of mental therapy exercises. 

The biggest advantage is that it has the least amount of side effects and there is no stigma attached to it like with medication and therapy. Even if it does little for your depression and anxiety, it will better you in other ways which are why health and exercise are so related. 

Exercise has also proved extremely helpful in the past when battling depression which is why It is common for doctors to recommend moderate exercise throughout the week rather than turning straight to heavy medication.

Stress-

Exercise reduces stress levels, leading to a happier and thus more productive day. It acts as a mood booster and improves mental fitness by increasing heart rate and stimulating the production of hormones that reverse stress-induced brain damage. These workouts act as brain exercises which eventually lead to less overthinking and help in combatting any existing stress.

Conclusion:

Although it may be temporary, exercise also gives you something to focus on. It gives you a goal and the motivation and determination to achieve that goal which helps block out other things and problems that may affect your mental health. 

Exercise is not the answer to all mental health issues, some problems are deeper rooted and require medication and therapy. But there is no doubt that exercise and working out does lead to better physical as well as mental health.
